GAIT · REFERENCE VALUES · 7 MIN

What is a “normal” walking speed for my age?

There is no universal walking-speed number that is normal for everyone. Reference data are most useful when the protocol and population are clearly defined.

Three things to know
01Published gait-speed reference values vary by age and sex.
02Distance, acceleration phase and instruction can materially alter the measured value.
03Personal longitudinal change may be more informative than comparison with a single cut-off.

Reference values are not diagnoses

Population norms describe distributions. They do not determine whether one person is healthy or unhealthy.

Protocol changes the number

Usual versus fast pace, walkway length and whether acceleration is included all affect gait speed.

Use the same protocol over time

For longitudinal monitoring, consistency of the measurement conditions is essential.
