To rise, the centre of mass must move forward and then upward while the hips and knees extend. Strength, balance and joint mobility therefore contribute together.

Chair height, foot position, use of the arms and timing instructions can change performance. This is why published protocols must be reproduced carefully.

A slower result describes functional performance. It does not identify one diagnosis or one muscle as the cause.
