POSTURE · SPINE · 7 MIN

Why can we lean further forward when walking?

A forward posture is rarely just a “back problem”. The spine, pelvis, hips, knees and ankles can all participate in keeping the body balanced.

Three things to know
01Sagittal balance is a whole-body problem, not a single-angle measurement.
02Pelvic, hip and knee compensation can help keep the centre of mass over the base of support.
03A recent progressive forward posture should be interpreted clinically rather than reduced to one photograph.

Balance is whole-body

When trunk alignment changes, the body can compensate through pelvic rotation, hip extension or knee flexion to maintain stability.

Posture and gait interact

Standing alignment does not fully predict walking posture. Dynamic movement can reveal compensations that are less visible in a static image.

Why context matters

Pain, weakness, fatigue, spinal alignment and movement strategy can all influence forward trunk position.
