A whole-system task
Every step requires propulsion, balance, sensory integration and rapid adjustment of the centre of mass. The final walking pattern therefore reflects several systems working together.
Why speed matters
Large cohort studies have found strong associations between gait speed and later health outcomes in older populations. These are prognostic associations, not proof that deliberately walking faster directly increases lifespan.
Beyond one number
A more complete gait reading considers cadence, step length, symmetry, variability and time spent in double support. Together, these parameters can help describe how mobility is changing.
