Muscle power: strength is only part of the equation.

Producing high force is useful. Producing it quickly can be even more important when rising, accelerating, climbing a step or recovering balance.

Three things to know
01Power combines force and movement velocity.
02Systematic reviews link muscle power with several measures of physical function in older adults.
03Power can provide information that is complementary to maximal strength.

Why velocity matters

Many real-life movements happen under time pressure. A reserve of strength is only useful if the nervous and muscular systems can recruit it quickly enough.

A different quality from strength

Strength asks how much force can be produced. Power asks how rapidly mechanical work can be generated. The two qualities overlap but are not identical.

Functional expression

Fast chair rise, acceleration and stair climbing turn an abstract muscular capacity into observable movement.
