The biomechanics of aging.

We do not simply walk more slowly with age. On average, the mechanical strategy used to move the body also changes.

Movement strategy changes

Across healthy aging studies, differences have been reported in step length, double-support time, joint angles and joint power. These are population-level tendencies rather than inevitable individual changes.

The role of the ankle

Push-off from the ankle contributes to forward progression. Meta-analytic data describe lower plantar-flexion and ankle power generation in older adults, which can shift part of the mechanical work toward other joints.

Why this matters clinically

Two people may walk at a similar speed using different strategies. Looking at the mechanics can therefore add context to a simple functional outcome.
